Raspberrypi driving a 20x4 LCD

Last night I managed to get finalize the connection of a raspberrypi via a PCF8547 i2c expander to a HD44780 LCD with 20x4 characters. I started with some other code(this and this), which I think is somehow buggy, but the code below works with the i2c display sold by exp-tech.de
